Lipsy London Glam Fragrance Review
Lipsy London Glam Fragrance

What a dramatic fragrance!

I've never seen such a glamorous bottle. I say instead of the LBD, this is probably an LBE - E for EDT. It's a black and chiselled yet feminine heart. Super sweet scent yet a musk. Lipsy London Glam is a total oxymoron. Tbh it confuses me - in a good way!

Wearing makeup in my line of work is tricky. The key is to look not-so-made up with makeup.

LOOK: Everyday Makeup

Here are a few products I picked up from the MAC Sharon Osbourne Collection.

Compared to the Kelly half of the MAC Osbournes Collection, these products lean warmer and have a lot of easy-to-wear colours. I particularly loved the mineralize skinfinish as well as the patentpolishes which were a surprise! Keep reading for my reviews and swatches.

MAC Blonde Mineralised Skinfinish, MAC Pink Swoon Blush, Benefit Hoola Bronzer, NARS Last Tango Lipstick, Physicians Formula Eyeliners, Lancome Mascara

This week was warm.

I was faced with melting migrating makeup especially mascara and liner that I felt it called for more heavy duty products. While shopping my stash, I came across some unexpected re-discoveries of some great items I'd love to share with you all... Keep reading!

This is one of my favourite MSFs as it imparts a beautiful pink glow without being over-the-top. I love it high on my cheekbones.

This is a light blue-pink that gives a natural pink cheek without being too pink. Don't be confused with the limited edition packaging, this blush is from the permanent collection. If you were building your blush set I would definitely recommend this one.

I have not met a bronzer that is as good as this one. It's my to-go bronzer. A matte bronze taupe shade that creates a natural looking contour for my MAC NC30 skin. I use this on my cheeks, temples but also as an eyeshadow for the crease. An excellent product, this is definitely one to check out.

This limited edition shade is a creamy neutral pink brown shade that gives me a my-lips-but-better look. Unfortunately it is limited edition but you may still be able to track it down in stores!

Now this is the big re-discovery! Despite the name being a mouthful, these thin eyeliners pack a punch. They are very pigmented, long-wearing and thin enough to provide good control. No smudging and no worries. I have been using Champagne to line the inner corner to the inner half of the lid and Pewter on the outer half stretching out to a little wing. It gives that subtle thicker lash effect often sported by Anna from VDM! I've previously reviewed these eyeliners here.

Lancome Hypnose in Waterproof
This is the original Lancome Hypnose but in the budge-proof waterproof formula. I love how this easily applies and doesn't flake. It lasts the whole day! Make sure you have a good waterproof makeup remover at hand - you can read my post on that here.

There you have it. My most loved products this week. If you've got a question or an opinion on this, leave a comment at the bottom of this post!
Have you made any amazing re-discoveries?

Part of good sun protection includes good eyewear.

Apart from protecting our eyes from the UV rays that damage our eyes and skin, they also protect us from wrinkles and crows feet which are formed from frequent squinting. How's that for a multi-purpose anti-aging accessory?

How to get big hair
How to get big hair
Being the naturally poker straight haired Oriental girl that I am, I have always craved for large luscious locks. Despite this, admittedly when it comes to hair care I am the laziest and I have not really gained much skill in the ways of the hair curler and tong unlike my sister Shannon (she's amazing!). Somehow I still manage to pull off the large mane *on most days* and get regular compliments whenever I let my hair down from my usual bun pre and post-work.

Here are my personal tips or rather 'beauty hacks' that I use to get big hair!

Urban Decay Moondust Eyeshadows in Space Cowboy & Diamond Dog

I was at a friend's wedding last week. With the hustle and bustle, I was people watching as you do and noticed the bride's sister wearing the most beautiful glitter eyeshadow on her eyes that just sparkled as she blinked... I was caught in awe! And of course like the makeup addict that I am I asked her what she wore and she eagerly took the eyeshadow from her handbag and showed me. They were the Urban Decay Glitter Eyeshadows from the Moondust range.

MAC Riot House and MAC Kelly Yum Yum Lipsticks on the Lips
MAC Riot House and MAC Kelly Yum Yum Lipsticks Lip Swatches

I reviewed the new lipsticks from the MAC Osbournes Collection in my last post and I wanted to show you how they look on the lips. MAC Riot House lipstick is an opaque light peachy pink, I find the best way to apply this is to dab a few on the lips and even out with a lip brush or finger. MAC Kelly Yum Yum is a bright hot pink with an awesome easy to apply texture in comparison to Riot House. The colour is quite dupeable though but nevertheless it is still lovely! Keep reading to see what other products I put on for this look.

ASOS Tank Top with Floral Print
ASOS Tank Top with Floral Print
It's not often I share photos of my outfits but I'm utterly smitten by this floral crop top. French T-shirts have been trending these days and I almost swore I would not get on the bandwagon, good thing I didn't. For £12 this tee proved quite the popular piece, shop it while it lasts!

Tank Top with Floral Print

A few weeks back, I attended a special event in the beautiful Balboa Park. Since I had just woken up around an hour prior, I did not have time to whip up a good make up look (and I was kinda a bit lazy to do so lol). Given the circumstance, I opted to go with my basic make up look.

Look: The Basics

Avene Cleanance Toner, La Roche-Posay Effaclar Toner, Vichy Normaderm Pore-Tightening Toning Lotion
Avene Cleanance Toner, La Roche-Posay Effaclar Toner, Vichy Normaderm Pore-Tightening Toning Lotion

I never believed that applying an extra step in your makeup routine for the sake of it being called ‘a toner’ was going to do you any good.

We spend so much time on skincare these days that I think its only worth while adding these steps to our routine if they have a proven benefit. Most toners often have a lot of chemicals in addition to alcohol and parabens. Alcohol helps dry the skin out but often it irritates even normal skins. Parabens have been used for a long time in skincare as a preservative and without this, products degrade much quicker. Because of the duration of the existence of parabens in the history of skincare, more research has gone into it than the other ‘new preservatives’ so much that parabens have been classified as potential carcinogens. Often I use toners for the purpose of making sure my makeup has been removed thoroughly after cleansing but if you have a wonder-product makeup remover, you shouldn’t need it for this purpose.

MAC Hi Jinks! and Young at Heart Casual Colours Review
Show me a multi-tasking product. I'll resist for a while though I know this is futile and I will cave in eventually, inevitably. I've had a quick peek at the new MAC Playland Collection, aptly named - it si full of brights... Though like a kid in a candy store I am drawn to vibrant pinks and corals, I have managed to show some self restraint. Most of thee colours appear over and over wih tons of dupes from macs own permanent range and even drugstore lines. And instead of buying the entire collection, I walked away with just two duo-tasking lip cheek products - the MAC Casual Colours in Young at Heart and Hi Jinks!

The Carbon Pocket Hair Comb, Precision Styling Brush, Easycare Styling Brush

When I was growing up I remember whenever I needed a hair comb stat, I would always turn to my dad. He always without fail had a thin comb in his back pocket. My mum never carried around such things! He had this along with a hanky that was a saving grace whenever I got a cold bless him!, his pocket address book where he also scribbled his to-do list, and of-course his wallet. His pocket comb was an everyday essential to him as was mine.

Thinking about gifts for Father's Day I think a good quality comb would be a practical gift for those special men in our lives (dad, partner, hubby) which they would use and would survive for years to come. Here I have three different heavy duty hair tamers from Denman Hair Fitness for Men which each have their type of man in mind:

The Precision Styling Brush (£7.99). If your man is on the metro side with perfectly coiffed hair or if he likes his hair long akin to Chris Helmsworth in Thor you can thank me for the good visual, this would be his brush. Suitable for all hair types and lengths, this has smooth round-ended pins that makes it easy to brush and style hair. It can be used with a hair drier, again a pro for our metro men! We do love them.

The Easycare Styling Brush (from £3.50). Fuss-free goes the easycare styling brush. This brush is ideal for most hair lengths but especially shorter and thinning hair. There's nothing wrong with thinning hair but some men are bothered by it. In some types of alopecia, we usually advise massaging the hairless areas of scalp to encourage blood flow to the area increasing chances of hair growth. The eight rows of ultra-soft bristles in this brush massage and stimulate the scalp without scratching, making it ideal for our men with thinning hair.

The Carbon Pocket Hair Comb (from £1.01). Going back to childhood memories, this is the type of comb I was talking about that my dad always carried around with him. It is a thin comb that has denser bristles on one end and the other end has bristles wider apart. It is great for those with short or fine hair. The unique thing about this comb is that it contains carbon fibre that minimises static electricity produced when combing hair. My dad and I tend to shock others with static bursts and this would do well to prevent that. In short if your man has short, fine hair and static-prone, and if he needs a thin light comb for on the go, choose this one!

The Carbon Pocket Hair Comb, Precision Styling Brush, Easycare Styling Brush
Lately my dad's response to 'Hey Dad can I borrow your comb?' has been 'use this' *shows hand claw and a smirk*. It seems he might have lost his pocket comb and its time for a new one... You know which one I would get for my dad, what about you?

These ultra-affordable Denman Hair Fitness Combs and Brushes are available from Boots and John Lewis stores nationwide.

Revlon Parfumerie Scented Nail Enamel Swatches Wintermint, Beach, Apricot Nectar

Gimmicks like scented nail perfumes always get me. Mind you, I am easily pleased I have been frequently told... Revlon has launched a fantastic line of scented nail enamels that just have me completely sold.

It's finally here! Summer is my absolute favorite season. Warm sun, cool breeze, sunglasses, high waisted shorts and crop tops - I love everything about it! A is for Astral Cream

Astral Cream is a multi-tasking cream that can be as an everyday moisturiser to keep skin soft and smooth, as a lip balm, makeup remover, face primer, hand cream and after sun cream. It is a very hydrating moisturiser that can soften even the driest of knees and elbows. It is one of those oldies but goodies that has been used since the 1950s. The formula has been essentially unchanged since its first release, an iconic beauty product.

Waterproof Eye Makeup Removers from L'oreal, Garnier, Nivea & The Body Shop

A few days ago while I was shopping my stash I made a big mistake. I decided to try one of my waterproof mascaras just for good measure and admired how it made my eyelashes look. But a few hours later just before bedtime though, I panicked. I realised I did not have anything to remove it with!

About Us

Follow me on twitter: @shannonksoriano

My name is Shannon. I was raised in the Philippines and I’m currently living in California. Make Up makes me appreciate my femininity. It gives a little boost to my self-confidence. It is no secret that every girl wants to get dolled up at least once in a while; some more often than others (e.g. me). My sister and I have always been sharing our own little beauty tricks and discoveries with each other; and we’re more than happy to share them with you as well. We’re here for you!

MAC NC35 Studio Sculpt Foundation
MAC NC35 Lightful Face Powder
NYX SMF 09 Tan
Loreal BB Cream Medium

My MAC 182 Brush. I do not leave the house without at least a layer of powder on my face, which I apply with my MAC 182. So basically I use this brush on a daily basis.

I would have to say my MAC Select Moisturecover Concealer. This product is simply irreplaceable. Concealer has been very essential to me, now that I’m swamped with a lot work. And this particular one does its job right. I can literally sleep at the crack of dawn and still look presentable the next day, thanks to this baby and the miracle it does to my eyebags.

My sister and I have actually grown up with makeup because of all the dance recitals we’ve had. Eyeshadow was my favorite part of the whole routine. We were in MAC store in Hong Kong when I saw my first makeup love, MAC Amberlights eyeshadow. I was so attracted to the shimmery bronze color. This ended up being the first MAC product (and make up product in general) I owned, thanks to my mom and sister.

My cheekbones. I think it gives a lot more definition to my face.

Concealer, Foundation, and Lip Stain. These are the three products I use on a daily basis. And I would probably go to beautiful Italy.

I think everyone should have a bottle of water and a bottle of lotion in their bag. Hydration is important people! Water hydrates your body and lotion hydrates your skin.

I’m pretty sure I’ve been made up before this, but my first memory would have to be when I played young Cosette in an adaptation of Les Miserables. I remember my mom putting make up on me, my aunt curling my hair with a curling iron, and me getting annoyed at how long it took for the both of them! (Well, it seemed like a long time when I was a kid)

My top skincare tip would be to keep good hygiene. I wash my face twice a day (once in the morning and once at night) with Neutrogena Deep Clean long last shine control cleanser/mask.

My name is Livia. I am a 20-something Filipina in the UK. I am a full-time doctor and my everyday makeup is pretty much 'my-face-but-better'. I do love getting dolled up and I wear the full works - foundation, eyeliner, mascara and blush. I have chubby oriental cheeks so contouring and highlighter are definite musts for me. Time is always of the essence in mornings though and I am proud to say that I have mastered my full face routine in 15 minutes or 10 minutes if I'm really pushing it... My friends and family always turn to myself and my sister for makeup and beauty advice and we are always keen to help. That's what The Skin and Beauty Blog is about, we're here to help you!

Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation in Warm Sand
Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation in 6.0 (a touch dark)
MAC Face and Body Foundation C3
MAC Pro Longwear Foundation NC25
MAC Studio Fix Powder Plus NC25
MUFE HD Foundation in 125
NARS Sheer Glow in Punjab

That would be Shiseido Eyelash Curler. My oriental lashes are more often than not super straight and definitely need curling. I can get away with using just my fingers to apply most products.

I would have to say my MAC Pro Longwear Foundation. This foundation is by far one of the most practical foundations I've tried. It dries quickly, covers just the right amount of skin I want making it look flawless, and wears for ages. I can wear this in hot humid environments and in my 13 hour shifts feeling safe that my foundation hasn't slipped off anywhere. It's incredible!

One of the first makeup products I remember falling inlove with is MAC Bombshell Lipstick. Its a frosty midtone pink lipstick that immediately lit up my very yellow-toned complexion. This was a treat from my mum while we were out traveling and I remember using it sparingly, in special occasions and in photoshoots. That was over 10 years ago... wow, time does fly!

My eyes. They're almond shaped and larger compared to most Oriental folk and I am often mistaken for having had blepharoplasty by fellow Asian friends! I take that as a compliment and I have my mum and my grandmum to thank for that.

This is a tough question but I would reach out for Foundation, Mascara and Eyelash Curler. This makes for a flawless face. I would probably go to Paris, I just love French fashion so chic and elegant.

Everyone needs to bring Aquaphor Healing Ointment or Vaseline in their bag. It makes for a good hand cream and even lip balm+gloss in a pinch.

My earliest ever makeup memory was my mum applying her matte red lipstick on my lips and and dotting them on my cheeks followed by quick blending with her thumbs for an instant lip and blush before my Ballet recital. I was probably around four at this time, its an eternal memory etched in my mind. Watching her reflection as she applied makeup made me want to grow up like her too.

My top skincare tip is to remove all makeup before bed. Bedtime is the time for your skin to recover and regenerate from the day exposed to all sorts of pollutants. This also avoids makeup clogging your pores and reduces the chances of getting irritant contact dermatitis from long skin exposure to chemicals. I use Bioderma Crealine Sensibio H2O to remove most makeup followed by Avene Gentle Milk Cleanser. For waterproof makeup, I use Garnier 2in1 Eye & Face Make Up Remover.

About Us. Livia

This weekend I've done a little bit of a splurge in the makeup department. This is a collective haul from my days of window shopping which ultimately ended up in product buys. Here are some new products for cheeks, contour, lips and hair from NARS, MAC and drugstore favourite L'oreal. I now realise eyes have been quite neglected, perhaps subconsciously as I am typically more drawn to lip and cheek makeup! These products will be reviewed individually later in their own time, but here are my initial impressions of the lust-worthy products above:

L'oreal Coral Denimista Glam Matte Gloss. Drugstore beauty giant L'oreal has released some new lip products this spring/summer. They are the Glam Matte Lip Glosses which are creamy products that dry to a matte finish. They come with a doe foot applicator. This colour I picked up is a neon coral pink that is just a bright pop of colour that would look fab on tanned olive skintones. I always think it should be called the 'Denim Coralista' as the name 'Coral Denimista' takes some getting used to...

NARS Sex Appeal Blush. This blush is the 'naughty' in the title post. I've always thought this shade was too pale and would look ashy on my skintone but actually on my cheeks it imparts the cutest natural looking flush of colour, no wonder NARS Sex Appeal is so popular in the Japanese market!

MAC Maleficent Sculpt Sculpting Powder. Once upon a time I used to own Sculpt in one of those contour/highlighter duos but I've long since swapped it away. MAC Sculpt Powder is a mid-tone grey brown that makes a really good contour on light to medium skintones. It is available from the permanent line in MAC Pro Stores but I prefer it in the special limited edition packaging. If this has run out online, MAC Harmony Blush from the permanent collection is the closest dupe!

NARS Laos Matte Multiple. It was about time I picked up one of these. They are quite pricey hence it took me so long to decide on a colour and I had some money vouchers on Space NK to use up. Laos is a vibrant reddish pink that looks great on the cheeks and very pretty on the lips. This will get lots of use from me in the summer. There were actually two shades I had my eyes on but I'll have this for now...

L'oreal Elnett Very Volume Hair Spray. You know me, I love my big hair and I am always trying out things to get the poofiest hair an Oriental girl can get. I wanted to try a hair trick I learned a few days ago that has to do with hair spray and picked this up. It smells like a hair salon (no surprise there) and does help lift my heavy roots when applied there. If you apply just the right amount, hair doesn't get too stiff or sticky. I picked up this handbag-sized mini canister to take with me through daily ventures.

If you've got a question or an opinion on this, leave a comment at the bottom of this post!

A Naughty Makeup Haul

Miley Cyrus with acne

Following on from my post on How to Get Rid of Moderate Acne this post focuses on therapies for the worst kind of acne - Severe acne.

You know when you've got severe acne if you have many large cysts and nodules on your face also affecting your chest and back. This acne is most prone to scarring and should be treated early. Make sure you see a Dermatologist if you've got this.

After all the measures for treating mild acne and moderate acne have failed, its perhaps time to consider treatments for severe acne.

Oral Antibiotics

This means antibiotics in tablet or capsule form. The most common ones we prescribe are the class of tetracyclines which include doxycycline, minocycline and lymecycline. These work by reducing inflammation and combatting the acnegenic bacteria P. acnes. These antibiotics should be avoided in pregnant women and young children as they can cause birth defects and discolouration of teeth. They also risk photosensitivity which means you need to wear sunscreen when out as you have increased susceptibility to sun damage. Use of these should be limited to 12 weeks at a time to reduce antibiotic resistance that reduces effectiveness of this treatment.

Now these are oral retinoids. The big guns. The most effective treatment of severe acne and usually if acne is very severe, this becomes the first line treatment. It targets all four causes of acne. Patients usually complete a course of 16-24 weeks and what's unusual about this therapy is that it has a target total dose of 120-150mg spread throughout the course. The dose is usually started at 0.5-1.0mg per day and increased as tolerated. While it is a very effective treatment, the use of this is tightly controlled due to its terrible side effects: It brings a very high risk of causing birth defects so pregnant women cannot take this, women of child-bearing age should also be using at least two modes of contraception. There is also a link of this causing depression, dry skin, dry eyes and liver damage, which are reversible on stopping therapy. Studies have shown that 50% of patients who take this are permanently cured after one course and 20% of patients need further treatment.

So that wraps up this week's series on Acne 101. I hope you've taken away something from these posts and do share these with your friends so we can all benefit from this. If you have any suggestions on further skin topics you would like me to write about, please let me know!
