Want to avoid makeup mayhem this holiday season? Here are our tips to help you look your best in your photos this Christmas!
1. Control Shine
Nothing’s ruins photos like a greasy looking face! You can prevent unwanted facial shininess in three ways: Use a mattifying primer such as MAC Oil Control Lotion (£22.50) before applying foundation, a blotting powder on top of foundation to set and minimise shine such a MAC Blot Powder Pressed (£20) - my trusted anti-shine powder for on-the-go, and blot out shine as required during the day using blotting sheets, I recommend Kleenex Shine Absorbing Sheets (£2.99).
2. Shimmer and Sparkle
I like to reserve sparkle for the eyes or cheeks (not both!). For the eyes, I personally love gold or neutral-toned eyeshadows such as MAC Woodwinked Eyeshadow (£12.50). The Urban Decay Naked Eyeshadow Palette (£37) also has all the eyeshadows you need for a stunning look. You can also use glitter eyeliner on top of black eyeliner such as Collection 2000 Glam Crystals Gel Eyeliner (£2.99) for a more subtle effect. For cheeks, I love using MAC Mineralized Skinfinishes (£22) or Bobbi Brown Shimmer Bricks (£32).
Highlighter is one of my essential makeup products. I am a big fan of MAC Pearl Cream Colour Base (£15) to use on the cheekbones, bridge of the nose and just underneath the eyebrow arch. You can also use them on your cupid’s bow to make lips look fuller. The effect this gives is absolutely gorgeous in person but also looks great in photos to make your cheekbones pop! I also recommend Bourjois Java Rice Loose Powder (£9.99) and Bobbi Brown Shimmer Bricks (£32).
4. The Matte Red Lippie
Use blue-based reds as they tend to make your teeth look whiter, such as Revlon Matte Lipstick in Really Red (£7.49), MAC Russian Red Lipstick (£15) and MAC Ruby Woo Lipstick (£15). Avoid orange-toned reds as they can make even the whitest teeth still look a smidge yellow. Make sure to line your lips to prevent bleeding with a matching red lip pencil such as MAC Cherry Lip Pencil (£12).
5. The Red Hot Manicure
I love red nails, such a classic statement colour. My to-go red nail varnishes are Rimmel Lycra Pro Nail Polish in Hot Gossip (£5.99) and Bourjois Paris 1 Seconde Nail Polish No. 11 (£5.99). I then top these with my favourite super shiny top coat Seche Vite Professional Top Coat (£7.19).
6. Big Hair
Who doesn’t love big sexy hair? For shampoos, I highly recommend the Vo5 Plump Me Up Shampoo (£3.99 - very affordable with great results), and if you want a lil treat, I also love Lush Big Shampoo (£11.50). When drying my hair, I use a bit of Vo5 Plump Me Up Heat Defence Volumising Spritz (£3.89) near the roots for volume, and then L’oreal Paris Elvive Extraordinary Oil UV Filter for All Hair Types (£9.99) near the ends for added shine.
7. Bigger Lashes!
False lashes are your friends! Strip lashes are easier to apply but individual lashes look more natural. Kiss lashes (£5.49) are among my favourite to use at the moment. They are lightweight, have a flexible band and are overall easy to use. Are you gifted with naturally long lashes? Try my favourite lash boosting head-turning combo: Lancome Cils Booster XL (£21) + Lancome Hypnose Drama Mascara (£22) = stunningly beautiful full body lashes.
